I think it is difficult to get right because everyone has an idea of how dreams do or don't work?
Yeah, I can understand what you mean. But think of how awesome it would have been if the film had actually gotten it right! I guess that's why I'm disappointed/mad at "Inception" because it could have been a clever film, but it wasn't.

I'd agree with you on the Matrix films, if I hadn't read some pretty amazing essays about Reloaded and Revolutions and their connections to religion/mythology that "saved" the movies for me and got me to see another side of them. I could give you a link to them if you're interested?
