♫ you are such a p.y.t., catching all the lights
Hello people from the awesome LJ → DW friending meme! I'm Chibi, nice to meet all of you! My basic info is on my profile, while a (sort of) intro post is right here. :D I also changed my DW layout for the occasion, haha.
This entry is going to be a mixture of fandoms and real life. We've had a lot of real life posts recently, so I want to balance things out a bit.
REAL LIFE
❖ So I am back at uni after three weeks of missed lectures. It's hard to go back to it, let me tell you. For starters, I almost feel like a stranger in the lectures. I missed three weeks and I have no idea what the lecturers are talking about. I'm going to have to ask someone for notes and catch up on the stuff that I missed on my own. Yeah, it's going to be tough. Exams are also one month away. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE. Time just flies.
❖ I have my Kobo glo! Oh my gosh, I LOVE it. It's made me fall in love with reading all over again. Ever since I've had it (more or less three weeks), I've finished two books already and I'm half-way through my third. They're just the Hunger Games books (more on that below) and I've also started The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's not an easy read, but I've been wanting to read it for a while now and it was free on the Kobo website! So why not. Anyway, I am loving my ereader and I can't wait to read more books on it.
❖ My macbook is driving me crazy. The laptop itself is great (I've had it ever since I started uni), but it's just the small RAM that I can't stand anymore. I have 2GBs of RAM memory, which means I can only run a few programs at a time and some programs I can't run at all because they need more than just 2GBs of RAM (i.e. programs to make videos with. I miss vidding). So, I decided to buy an 8GB RAM memory from Amazon! It wasn't even that expensive, only £30. As soon as I will put it in my computer, it will run faster and smoother and I will be able to make fanvideos again. I can't wait! :D

❖ I went to the cinema with Andrew's family and we watched Skyfall. I'm not exactly the biggest James Bond fan - tbh, he kind of bores me. XD; But Andrew's parents are big fans of the 007 franchise and they invited me, so I decided to be polite and accept. I thought it was okay. Maybe a bit too long, but that's because I'm not too fond of James Bond movies (Andrew's parents thought it was brilliant). Andrew thought it was okay, too. Don't get me wrong, it was a well-done movie... I'm just not that big 007 fan. But it was good.
❖ I decided to watch the latest episodes of The Big Bang Theory, even though I have a kind of... love/hate relationship with this show. I mainly just watch it to see where they're going with Leonard/Penny. I can't help it, this show made me ship them! And now I need to know what happens. I must admit, the whole 'Penny doesn't know whether she loves Leonard or if she wants to break up with him again' thing is kind of getting on my nerves. Writers, make up your minds! And she still hasn't said 'I love you' to Leonard. Part of me thinks it's going to happen this season, like, they'll have a very special and romantic moment (kind of like the lab scene) and she will say it either unconsciously or fully-conscious of her love for him. Because I want to believe that there is something between them. I know I shouldn't take TBBT too seriously, it's just a comedy show, but Leonard and Penny have so much potential in my eyes.
In the meantime, I'll just watch this over and over again. It's just so adorable. I NEED ICONS OF THIS MOMENT.also, why the heck does this remind me of Andrew and I, I DON'T KNOW
I like them so much, I was even considering creating a community here at Dreamwidth about them for other Leonard/Penny fans. Would it be a bad or a good idea? IDK.
❖ As I said before, thanks to the help of my forever lovely ereader, I've managed to read The Hunger Games. I'm now halfway through Mockingjay. I read the first two books pretty quickly (I finished each one in two days), but this one is taking me a little more time to finish. It's probably because I find it... quite boring, to be honest. I mean, very little has happened and I'm halfway through it. There's a FREAKING WAR going on and I just... couldn't care less. Which is really weird, 'cause I enjoyed Catching Fire and, generally speaking, I do want to know what happens in the end... but Mockingjay has just been so boring, I can't bring myself to read it as I read the first two.
I'm not exactly a huge fan of the series, but I think it's okay for teenage fiction. It could be written a bit better, but in general, I think it's alright. I don't think I like Katniss that much, though. She was alright in the first two books, but in here she almost has some Mary Sue traits that I don't like, so the fact that the book is in her perspective also doesn't help. The only character I seem to like is Peeta. I do care about him and I want to know if he gets better or not. I like Prim, too. She's kinda awesome. And Finnick, too. I don't particularly care for Gale or his romance with Katniss. I think Katniss is better off with Peeta, tbh. I think she loves Peeta and that she likes Gale more as a friend than as a boyfriend, she's just confused and oblivious about it.
I will definitely try to read more these days. For those of you interested in having a discussion about THG, I'm at the start of chapter 15 of Mockingjay, so please, don't spoil it for me! :)
❖ Lastly, I have started watching The IT Crowd. Man, I LOVE IT. It's like... what I wanted out of the Big Bang Theory, but that BBT never was. It also helps that they're computer nerds, so I can relate to them. And Jen, oh, she's just so funny and lovely! She's not overly pretty or gorgeous (which makes sense, 'cause she's not there to just be the pretty girl who goes 'uh?' at the nerds), not every guy that she meets instantly falls for her and, unlike Penny, we actually see her showing off her social skills! Ahhh, I am so loving it. I need icons of this show, too.
And that's pretty much all. I need to start watching Once Upon a Time and finish the pilot of Elementary (but from what I've seen, I can tell I already love this show).
Also, I decided to start that 30-day meme that I posted some time ago, also in the hopes that it will make me update my journal more. Here goes! :D
Day 01 – Something you hate about yourself.
I used to hate my body, but now I've grown comfortable with who I am, especially thanks to my boyfriend, Andrew. So, I guess right now the only thing that I hate about myself is the fact that I can get stressed really easily. Stress is never fun.
That's all for today!

* I LOVE having an ereader. I got a Sony ereader in... 2008, I think, and I have never looked back since then. I read so much more (I already read a lot before) and I love it. It also saves me a lot of space (storing books) and money (sending them home from wherever I live). Glad you are enjoying yours!
* I went to see Skyfall with my parents for my birthday, and I felt similarly. I've seen a lot of Bond films but I wouldn't class myself as a fan, I think they're okay. Skyfall was okay as well.
* I feel the same as you about THG books. I really, REALLY enjoyed the first two (particularly the second, I feel) but the third book felt dull to me as well. This is in contrast to many of my friends who felt that the third book was the best of the series. I just felt like it was all over the place and, yes, a bit underwhelming. Will be interested to know how you feel by the end! I also think perhaps you're not supposed to like Katniss? At least, I didn't either. I loved Finnick! And I found that while I didn't like Peeta in the beginning, I grew to really care about his welfare as well. Gale seemed like a dick. :D
* The IT Crowd is ♡ I love Moss but I think I like all the characters pretty equally. It's a shame that I feel it went a little bit downhill in later series, but I remember series 1 and 2 being really really good and worth it. They're making more still apparently o_O

* I know, right?! Ereaders are just so awesome. I live far away from home too and it's just impossible for me to buy books here and then send them home (or worse, having to carry them in my luggage where they just take up space). Plus, it's just so much more portable than a real book! I can carry it around and it doesn't weigh anything! I am so glad I have it. :D
* Glad we have similar opinions on Skyfall!
* Tbh, I thought I was really going to enjoy to the third book as well. I like the political and philosophical side of THG books (Capitol being in control when it really just relies on the Districts, the lifestyle of people in the Capitol, etc.) and I thought Mockingjay was going to focus on that. I'm very surprised it's been this boring. I mean, this is the book where things should finally be happening, but... nothing interesting is happening. All the action happened in Catching Fire, while Katniss was in the Games (which I feel really cheated on. I understand the book is in Katniss's perspective, but I was genuinely interested in District 13 and the uprising of the other Districts and then it all happened "off-camera", so to speak). Katniss is part of the rebels, but all she does is sit around and shoot videos, like it's a reality show or something. I mean... it's a war! Do something! Or make something happen! Anything but this, lol!
As for Katniss herself, I thought you were actually supposed to like her? I mean, she's obviously the heroine of the books. I'm actually a little afraid of saying that I don't like her, because I've seen people assume that you're against strong females if you don't like her (they react even worse if you say you think she's a Mary Sue). But yeah, she's just kind of... not my type of character.
Gale seemed like a dick. :D
He is, isn't he? :D I really don't like him now that he seems to want to kill innocent people without even feeling slightly guilty about it. He was introduced as a nice guy and you kind of had to feel sorry for him, because he, of course, likes Katniss but she has to act like she's with Peeta and yadda yadda yadda. But in reality? I think he's really just a jerk masked as a nice guy.
* Moss is awesome! And they're making more? I thought it was over. But I'm really glad I started watching it, it's really an awesome show! ♥

Have you read the Uglies series by the way? I read them right after THG and it felt like quite an easy transition (with some of the same issues!)
no subject
What tires me more is the "I'm just an average person but apparently I'm the only one who can solve the world's problems" trope. I've read too many of them.
I totally agree. When it's done well it's great, but when it's not... it almost feels Mary Sue-ish.
Nope, I don't know that series! But now you've got me interested, haha. What is it about? Is it another trilogy?
no subject
It's young adult sci-fi really, set in the future where most of humanity has been wiped out and the remainder live in tightly-controlled city states. Everyone gets surgery at age 16 to turn them "pretty" so that everybody is equal in appearance, and the city-states work on the principle that they only use sustainable energy and resources to avoid wiping themselves/nature out. It's got a lot of interesting conspiracy stuff like THG does on the outside (with the Capitol and whatnot) and another female lead, though again she's a bit unlikable IMHO XD
Apparently they're making a film out of it, too! I really enjoyed books 1-3, and book 4 was okay but I had some issues with how weeaboo it was (the only book set in Japan for no apparent reason). I'd still recommend them though, so long as you have no squicks about surgery as it's quite often explicitly/implicitly referred to and talked about.
no subject
I'm okay with surgery, but it might bother me a bit if they talk about it in explicit details... do they do that?

I almost exclusively read fanfiction on my Kobo; it's awesome!
no subject
I'm going to put fanfiction on my Kobo too, as soon as I figure out how to do it, haha! Do you convert your fanfics to PDF or do you just put them on the Kobo as TXT files?
no subject
I manage all the documents (fanfiction and "actual books") on my e-reader by using a free downloadable program called Calibre instead of the actual Kobo one.
For fanfiction that I find on sites that aren't the AO3 (LiveJournal, Tumblr, elsewhere), I use Grab My Books to create epubs, which I then save on my computer.

*salta un pò di quello che hai scritto sui libri di "The Hunger Games"* Io ho letto solo il primo libro e visto il primo film, quindi non saprei cosa dirti qui...sono rimasta piacevolmente colpita dal primo libro, temevo di trovarmi a leggere un *libro per ragazzini* (ho avuto questa spiacevole sorpresa tendando di leggere i libri di Percy Jakson...) ed invece non mi è dispiaciuto! Sono curiosa di sapere come va avanti la storia!*__*
Devo iniziare anch'io a vedermi "Once Upon a Time" ed "Elementary"!;^;
Mannaggia,allo stress!Quello non è mai bello da avere!=( *hugs*
no subject
Sì sì, è proprio l'ereader! XD Mi ero dimenticata quanto fosse bello leggere! ♥
XD
Guarda, non parlarmi del tira-e-molla fra Penny e Leonard... io li adoro insieme e li ho adorati fin dal primo episodio e non mi è mai andato giù il modo in cui si sono lasciati. Insomma, era troppo evidente che gli sceneggiatori volevano farli rompere (probabilmente perché il "stanno insieme o non stanno insieme" attrae gli spettatori e dà un motivo in più per vedere il telefilm) e che era tutta una scusa. Anche perché mi sembravano davvero felici finché Leonard non ha detto 'ti amo' a Penny e potevano tranquillamente continuare a stare assieme anche se Penny non era pronta a dire 'ti amo' a Leonard (un po' come hanno fatto nella quinta stagione). Poi se una ha problemi con il proprio ragazzo, mica va a seguire i consigli di un totale estraneo!! Poi Penny non aveva neanche pensato di lasciare Leonard, è successo tutto davvero troppo all'improvviso. Magari puoi trovare gli episodi nuovi subbati in italiano da qualche parte? Io non vorrei spoilerarti gli ultimi episodi di TBBT... XD;
A me è piaciuto particolarmente il secondo!

no subject
no subject
*high five back* XD
Sì sì, concordo! Che bello, non vedo l'ora!! *___*
no subject
Fangirlare fa bene alla salute, quindi fai pure!A me non dispiace!XD
No,guarda...ti capisco!Io a volte ho rinunciato a controllare i nuovi post su Tumblr perchè mi si bloccava sempre...T__T'
no subject
Quanto hai ragione! XD
no subject
A me piace così com'è!!!"!

Wow, it seems like so many people blazed through the first two HG books and found the third... not so interesting. Personally, I loved the second and was so excited for Mockingjay, and then couldn't make myself like it. It's sad; it sours what was otherwise a reasonably enjoyable book series for me when I absolutely never ever want to reread a whole third of it (and the finale, no less; I cut a little slack for trilogies where the second book stumbles).
no subject
I loved the second one, too. I guess maybe they were very quick to read because they were action-packed? While the third one moves at a far slower pace. But then again, I've met people who thought the first parts of the first two books (when the characters are not in the arena yet) were hard to read because very little happened and it just felt like filler until the actual Games started. Personally, I enjoyed part 1 of Catching Fire more than the Games (even though the Games were good too) and I would have liked to see what was happening outside of the Games. I thought Mockingjay was going to be what I would have liked to see more of in Catching Fire, but so far it has been nothing like it. It really is sad.
I wonder why, though. Maybe the author didn't enjoy writing this book so much, so as a result we can't seem to enjoy it, either? Or maybe she had no ideas left? Or maybe she's good at writing lots of action-packed stuff, but when it comes to the political and philosophical aspects of her series, she just... can't write about them for whatever reason?
no subject
I've heard the speculation that her she has good ideas for things that don't involve action, but her writing skills are much more polished for the action-y bits. I guess I could see that. I know there's stuff I really struggle to write, even though I have the ideas.
no subject
Yeah, that makes sense. I think she has good ideas and the action-y bits can keep your attention. I think, overall, she's an okay writer. She's certainly better than Stephanie Meyer for teenage fiction!
no subject
Oooh, interesting to hear your opinions on the kobo. I have a kindle myself but my dad and I are thinking of splitting the cost of an e-reader of some sort for her Christmas. Just...finding the right one that does enough but not too much and isn't too much of a faff and is easy to get books on and...wow. It is a mess XD
no subject
Oh, I think the Kobo is perfect! It's also very easy to use. I was torn between a Kobo and a Kindle for some time, but in the end I decided to go with the Kobo, simply because it can read more formats than the Kindle, so it doesn't tie you with one store and you can get books pretty much from everywhere. It has some games and an internet browser, but I haven't tried them yet (I've been too busy reading, lol). The built-in lights of the Kobo glo are very even on the screen, while I've heard people complain about the Kindle Paperwhite and its lights. Also, you can add an external SD card with the Kobo in case you need more space! :D

It feels like such a major decision and it isn't even for me loool

Lol, I know the feeling. I'm somewhat of a computer nerd, so I like looking into this kind of stuff, haha.

You think 2Gb of memory is bad? I don't even have that! (My PC is ooooooold - I'm supposed to have 1Gb, but it runs at 0.99Gb most of the time). But I never thought about upgrading the memory, really, since it's more difficult with laptops (which is what mine is) than desktops. Hmm, maybe that's what I'll ask for for Xmas!

Wow, that is old! My laptop is a mac and I've seen quite a lot of videos on how to upgrade the RAM memory and it seems really easy. Maybe you could try watching some videos, too? I was initially going to go to a shop and let other people to upgrade the memory for me, but then I saw all these videos of people who upgraded their memories in less than 10 minutes all by themselves and I decided that I could do it on my own. But yeah, that would be an awesome Christmas gift!

Yeah, 2007 vintage is this baby. I have upgraded RAM before, on my old Dell laptop, so I know it can be done, but I'd completely forgotten that it was an option until you mentioned it (ha ha, have I mentioned I am dumb? ;) ). Definitely something to bear in mind for the near future, though!

AND THE IT CROWD, OH MY GOD. LET ME FLAIL WITH YOU. I love it so much! SO MUCH. I love Jen. Her voice! ♥ Just, oh. ♥
In fact, anything by Graeme Linehan is guaranteed to be on my 'AMAZE!' list. If you ever get the chance, check out Black Books, and his very early stuff, Father Ted, which is probably an acquired taste, but so hilarious oh man. ♥
Have an IT Crowd icon.

YES, ANOTHER FAN OF THE IT CROWD! JEN IS AWESOME. THEY'RE ALL AWESOME. And gosh, I think I might ship Roy/Jen. Or all of them may be my OT3. I don't know yet. All I know is that I love this show. SO MUCH. ♥
Ohh, thanks for the recs! They're definitely going on my to-watch list. :D
You just reminded me that I need IT Crowd icons. /goes to search for some

I LOVE LEONARD AND PENNY. THIS SEASON HAS BEEN KIND OF ANNOYING I JUST WISH THEY'D SORT OUT THEIR RELATIONSHIP. I HATE THE HALF ON, HALF OFF RELATIONSHIP THEY HAVE. THEY SHOULD JUST MAKE UP ALREADY. PENNY WILL PROB SAY I LOVE YOU IN THE FINALE OR SOMETHING, AND THEN WE'LL HAVE TO WAIT FOR NEXT SEASON FOR MORE. ;____;
I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ON THE HUNGER GAMES. I ADORE THE FIRST TWO BOOKS SO MUCH AND READ THEM AS QUICKLY AS YOU DID. MOCKINGJAY FEELS LIKE IT'S RUSHED. LIKE THE AUTHOR WAS PUSHED TO FINISH THIS STORY AND I WISH FOR SO MUCH MORE IN IT. I ADORE PEETA TOO. PEETA IS MY FAVE. I WISH I HAD MY KATNISS/PEETA ICONS THAT I HAVE ON LJ. ;___;
I MAY HAVE TO CHECK OUT ELEMENTARY. THAT SHOW LOOKS INTRIGUING. :)

Yes, another Leonard/Penny lover! ♥ I hadn't thought of the possibility of Penny saying 'I love you' to Leonard in the season finale... all I know is that she needs to say it this season, it's long overdue! And I refuse to believe that she hasn't said it because she doesn't love Leonard... there's obviously something between them, something that makes her go back to Leonard every time. It can't be just a mere crush!
It does feel kind of rushed. It's a shame, it could have been a great book! Now that you mention it, I actually have zero icons of The Hunger Games... I need a Peeta icon!
It certainly does! I really want to see how they're going to portray the relationship between Sherlock and female!Watson. :D
